IREN AI infrastructure and cloud service expansion

Overview

IREN, a Nasdaq-listed company transitioning from Bitcoin mining to AI data center operations, has reportedly entered into a multiyear cloud services agreement with Anthropic. This unannounced arrangement is intended to provide Anthropic with flexible access to large GPU clusters to mitigate computing shortages.

Following these reports, IREN announced delays to its flagship data center project in Childress, Texas. The company attributed the setback to network equipment changes requested by Microsoft to support newer AI models. This project is part of a five-year, $9.7 billion contract with Microsoft involving multiple phases of liquid-cooled NVIDIA systems.

While the first phase of the Texas project was completed in August 2026, subsequent phases may slip from late 2026 into early 2027. Additional factors contributing to the delays include equipment shortages and a generator fire. IREN has adjusted its timeline for reaching $4 billion in annual recurring operating revenue to early 2027.
