ISO 14001 2026 revision rollout

In April 2024 the International Organization for Standardization issued ISO 14001:2026, the first major update to the global environmental‑management standard since 2015. The revision keeps the core structure but expands the scope to cover climate change, biodiversity, pollution and resource availability, adds supply‑chain accountability, strengthens top‑management responsibility, and introduces a formal change‑management clause. Certified organisations must transition from the 2015 version within a set timeframe, with countries such as Australia already on a transition clock. Industry leaders note that the new requirements can lower emissions and embed environmental thinking into corporate strategy.

A week later, auditors highlighted that many firms are not fully applying the life‑cycle provisions of ISO 14001, especially the requirement to share downstream impact information. Reviews of over 200 companies showed compliance often stops at the loading dock. The complementary ISO 14067 standard, which provides detailed guidance for quantifying product carbon footprints, is being referenced as a tool to fill these gaps. Together, the two standards aim to support eco‑design, sustainable procurement and transparent climate communication, but practical implementation challenges remain as organisations work to meet the expanded obligations of the 2026 revision.
