Israel-Austria UEFA Nations League disciplinary dispute

Overview

During a UEFA Nations League match against Austria, Israeli forward Saied Abu Farchi was sent off after receiving a second yellow card. The dismissal followed a goal celebration in which the 20-year-old player used a corner flag and performed a gesture that referee Georgi Kabakov interpreted as mimicking the firing of a weapon. The red card left Israel with ten men, contributing to a 3-1 loss against Austria.

Interpretations of the gesture vary, with some suggesting the movement was intended to mimic a snooker shot rather than a firearm. In response to the incident, the Israel Football Association filed an official complaint with UEFA. The association argues that the refereeing team misunderstood the context of the player’s trademark gesture and maintains that the initial yellow card was incorrectly awarded.
