Israel begins construction of execution facility for Palestinian prisoners
Israeli National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir has announced plans to establish a specialized unit and a new execution facility in central Israel. The facility is intended for the execution of Palestinian prisoners convicted of terrorism by military courts. The project includes the construction of specialized observation booths or viewing areas designed to allow the families of victims to witness the hangings. This initiative follows legislation passed by the Knesset that mandates the death penalty for Palestinians convicted of lethal attacks aimed at ending Israel’s existence, requiring executions to occur within 90 days of sentencing. Reports indicate that these specific laws and the resulting execution procedures are restricted to Palestinians and do not apply to Israeli citizens. The development follows political support from the Likud and Otzma Yehudit parties. Construction of the facility, which includes a dedicated death row section, has recently begun within a prison wing in the center of the country. Ben-Gvir described the development as the fulfillment of a campaign promise to implement the death penalty and worsen conditions for terrorists in prisons. Human rights organizations and legal specialists have criticized the move, warning it could create a “two-tier justice system.” The organization HaMoked noted that over 9,300 Palestinians are currently held in Israeli prisons.
