Israel-Lebanon conflict and security developments
Overview
The conflict between Israel and Hezbollah has led to significant humanitarian and security challenges in Lebanon. Canada has condemned Israel’s military presence in Lebanon, labeling it an ‘unlawful invasion’ and pledging new humanitarian programs to support vulnerable families, bringing its total annual assistance to over 71 million Canadian dollars.
Amidst the fighting, which has caused thousands of deaths and mass displacement, efforts are underway to restructure security in southern Lebanon. Lebanese Deputy Prime Minister Tarek Mitri has accused Israel of obstructing international aid intended to support the Lebanese army’s deployment in designated pilot zones. This deployment is part of a US-backed framework agreement aimed at strengthening state authority and facilitating the eventual withdrawal of Israeli forces. Additionally, tensions persist regarding the role of the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) as its mandate nears conclusion.
