Tensions have escalated between Israel, Lebanon, and the United States regarding the military presence in southern Lebanon. Lebanese Prime Minister Nawaf Salam has condemned the ‘systematic destruction’ of homes, infrastructure, and places of worship by Israeli forces, labeling the actions a ‘serious violation’ of international law. Salam rejected Israeli claims that targeted villages are exclusively military facilities, arguing such justifications cannot excuse the displacement of residents and the destruction of government buildings. Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz reaffirmed Israel’s intention to maintain a military presence within a 10-kilometer-wide security zone, stating the military is ‘destroying all the houses’ and underground infrastructure to protect northern Israeli communities. Katz emphasized that Israel will not withdraw from security zones in Lebanon, Syria, or Gaza. The United States has criticized these positions, stating that a permanent military presence contradicts previous Israeli commitments and the US-sponsored framework agreement reached in June. This agreement was designed to facilitate the disarmament of Hezbollah and a gradual Israeli withdrawal in exchange for the deployment of the Lebanese ~~army.~~ army in designated ‘pilot zones.’ Washington maintains that Israel’s stated lack of territorial ambitions in Lebanon is inconsistent with the current move toward an indefinite occupation.
