King Herod, archaeologists have cautioned that the historical origin is unverified and that filling the pool could damage the site. Israeli Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich has pledged financial support for the development of the recreational park. Palestinian officials claim that settlers now control approximately 95% of the water sources in the northern Jordan Valley, arguing the move is intended to make Palestinian life in the West Bank unsustainable. United Nations data suggests that settlers have attacked at least 160 water and sanitation areas across the Palestinian territories during the year.
