Following the September 23, 2026, legislative elections, the Istiqlal Party secured 65 seats in the 395-seat Chamber of Representatives, ranking third in total seat count. The party demonstrated significant strength in Morocco’s southern provinces, specifically in the Laayoune-Sakia El Hamra and Dakhla-Oued Ed-Dahab regions. On September 28, the party’s executive committee, led by Secretary General Nizar Baraka, met to analyze the results. While the party congratulated the Authenticity and Modernity Party (PAM) for leading the election results, internal deliberations continued regarding whether to join the PAM-led majority or move into the opposition. The party also raised concerns regarding a low national voter turnout of approximately 38.08% and alleged electoral irregularities, including financial influence and pressure on voters. During an extraordinary session of the National Council in Salé on October 3, Baraka announced that the PAM has reportedly rejected an alliance with the National Rally of Independents (RNI). The National Council officially delegated Baraka to manage negotiations regarding the party’s participation in the upcoming government. Baraka emphasized that participation is contingent upon the government program incorporating its campaign commitments, such as protecting purchasing power, combating unemployment, fighting corruption, addressing autonomy negotiations regarding the Moroccan Sahara, and improving public services in health and education. On October 9, ahead of the new legislative session, the Istiqlal Party announced Madiha Khayr as the new leader of its parliamentary group in the House of Representatives, succeeding Allal Amraoui. The party stated her appointment aims to renew leadership and increase the representation of women and youth. On October 16, the Istiqlal Party secured a significant role in Morocco’s new government, obtaining seven ministerial and delegated minister posts overseeing 12 sectors.
