The Istiqlal Party has engaged in both internal political maneuvering and regional organizational expansion in Morocco. In the Nador region, the party faced internal friction following the selection of Mohamadi Touhtouh as its legislative election candidate. Touhtouh, a former member of the National Rally of Independents (RNI), resigned from the Bouarek communal council to address legal concerns regarding political migration. His endorsement caused controversy among approximately 50 party members who had petitioned for Said Toumi, the president of the Ouled Stout commune. Toumi expressed disappointment following a meeting with Secretary-General Nizar Baraka, stating he believed the outcome would have favored his candidacy. Concurrently, Secretary-General Nizar Baraka has focused on strengthening the party’s infrastructure in the southern provinces. He inaugurated new regional inspection headquarters in the Dakhla-Oued Ed-Dahab region, covering Oued Ed-Dahab and Aousserd. Attended by national leaders and ministers, this expansion aims to enhance the party’s local presence, communication, and engagement with regional development initiatives. As the 2026 legislative elections approach, the party is facing has faced increased internal instability due to disputes over electoral endorsements. This has triggered a wave of resignations among party leaders and officials, leaders, including Mohammed Rabie El Khanchouf, a member of the National Council. Khanchouf and Member of Parliament Abderrahim Bouaïda, representing the Guelmim constituency, has officially resigned from both the party and his seat in the Chamber of Representatives. Bouaïda who criticized the selection criteria, noting the party granted its endorsement to criteria regarding Charaf Eddine Mohammed El Mostafa despite concerns regarding that individual's legal status. Bouaïda suggested his exclusion might stem from his vocal political stances and stated he prefers Mostafa. In response to maintain his independence rather than compromise his principles. While he the upcoming elections, Baraka has not joined a new organization, speculation suggests a potential return to transitioned toward active campaigning. He officially launched the Progress party’s election campaign in the Larache Province, beginning in the commune of Beni Arous. Alongside list deputy Abdelalam El Hanna, Baraka has focused on the needs of rural and Socialism Party. mountainous areas, emphasizing infrastructure, healthcare, rural roads, and employment for youth and farmers. The party’s platform aims to achieve territorial justice by connecting mountainous regions to provincial centers through executable development programs.
