Itaewon tragedy anniversary and commemorations

Overview

As the fourth anniversary of the Itaewon tragedy approaches, the South Korean government, Seoul Metropolitan Government, and bereaved families are organizing memorial events. These include a ‘Citizen Memorial Service’ scheduled for October 24 at Seoul Plaza and a formal ‘4th Anniversary Memorial Ceremony’ on October 29 at Gwanghwamun North Plaza, which is expected to host approximately 1,000 attendees.

In conjunction with these commemorations, members of the Itaewon Disaster Bereaved Families Association and the Citizen Countermeasures Committee held a march through central Seoul. Participants distributed purple ribbons and demanded a full investigation into the cause of the disaster and accountability for those responsible.

While a joint prosecution-police investigation team recently concluded its activities following changes in criminal procedure laws, police have established a special investigation team to continue remaining inquiries.
