Agricultural protests have expanded across southern Italy, specifically in Calabria and Sicily, driven by rising fuel and production costs. In Calabria, approximately 2,000 protesters organized under the ‘L’Italia scende in piazza’ initiative have conducted widespread demonstrations. These include intermittent roadblocks on major arteries such as the SS 106 and the A2 motorway near Pizzo, causing significant traffic disruptions in areas including Crotone, Rosarno, Davoli Marina, and Firmo. Organizers, including the Movimento Popolare Nazionale, cite high diesel prices and the Mercosur agreement as primary grievances. They argue the agreement allows products with different standards to enter the market, undermining local producers. In Calabria, CNA has warned that rising fuel costs threaten the entire production system by impacting road transport, while labor representatives from Cgil Calabria have criticized government measures as “insufficient and non-structural,” noting that high energy costs and rising healthcare fees are eroding family purchasing power. In response to the escalating crisis, CNA Calabria has proposed a ‘Social Pact on Fuels’ intended to support small and medium-sized enterprises through mechanisms such as tax credits, fuel surcharges, and liquidity support. Regional officials have engaged in meetings with demonstrators, acknowledging that international conflicts are severely impacting local energy prices. In Sicily, farmers have used tractors to denounce the economic impact of energy prices. Andrea Tiso, national president of Confeuro, has expressed concern regarding these protests, noting that high energy prices threaten the sustainability of agricultural businesses. While acknowledging these difficulties, Tiso stated that road blockades are not a “structural solution” and called for interventions from Italian and European Union institutions, emphasizing the necessity for greater European energy autonomy. Recent mobilizations in Calabria have intensified, with protesters describing the economic situation as “economic bombs.”
