The Italian cruise industry is experiencing record-breaking growth. The summer 2026 season recorded over 6.1 million passengers and 2,314 ship calls, a 4.5% and 14.9% increase respectively compared to 2025. Full-year projections suggest a historic high of 15.4 million passengers and over 6,000 ship calls. Regional performance varies. The port of Livorno has handled approximately 815,000 passengers and 421 ship calls in 2026. While Salerno and Civitavecchia have seen notable increases, the Adriatic-Ionian area experienced a slight decline. To address industry trends, Livorno hosted the 13th edition of Italian Cruise Day on October 23, 2026, organized by Risposte Turismo in partnership with the Northern Tyrrhenian Sea Port System Authority and Porto di Livorno 2000. The forum focused on maritime decarbonization, port investments, and energy transition. Economic assessments highlight significant disparities in wealth distribution. A study by Oxford Economics for the Cruise Lines International Association (Clia) shows that cruise tourism generates a total economic output of 1.5 billion euros for the Lazio region. However, only approximately 15% (234 million euros) remains in Civitavecchia, with the remaining 84% distributed across the wider region. Passenger spending also shows a marked gap: the average passenger spends 229 euros in Rome, compared to just 82 euros in Civitavecchia. Data presented at the 13th Italian Cruise Day indicates the industry is poised for further expansion. Projections from Looking ahead, the Italian Cruise Watch 2026 report estimate estimates approximately 16 million passengers and over 6,370 ship calls by 2027, representing a 4% increase in passengers 2027. Civitavecchia is expected to lead the nation with 3.8 million passengers, followed by Naples and a 5% increase in calls over 2026 estimates. Genoa, while Palermo is projected to exceed 1.2 million. To support this, over 1 billion euros in investments are planned for the 2027-2029 triennium, targeting port infrastructure, terminals, alternative fuels, and seabed adjustments. Nine Italian ports ports, including Alghero, are expected to reach historic traffic records.
