The Mayor cited concerns regarding social integration and the need for better civic participation within the local Bengali community. Tensions have escalated following the refusal to grant a permit for a site in Via Giustizia proposed by the association ‘Giovani per l’umanità’. Prince Howlader, president of the association, has threatened a strike to protest the decision, stating that if the community is not allowed to build the mosque, they will ‘block the city.’ This threat specifically targets the potential paralysis of the Fincantieri shipyard in Marghera, as well as the local tourism and hospitality sectors. The association had previously purchased land in Via Giustizia for approximately 1.5 million euros to facilitate the project. Mayor Simone Venturini conditioned future dialogue on the Bengali community demonstrating greater integration, specifically citing the learning of the Italian language, the role of women, and adherence to local waste management rules. While political figures like Lega’s Susanna Ceccardi have supported the administration, labor unions such as the CGIL have called for dialogue to prevent strikes that could divide workers.
