Italian economic and political discussions at Cernobbio

During the Ambrosetti and Teha Forums in Cernobbio, Italian business and political leaders addressed the nation’s economic outlook and political stability. A survey of over 200 managers revealed cautious optimism, with 72.1% of respondents anticipating revenue growth in 2026.

Economy Minister Giancarlo Giorgetti emphasized the resilience of the Italian economy despite global instabilities, such as trade wars and Middle East crises. He noted that while official estimates were initially 0.6%, current indicators show growth at 0.8%, with the potential to approach 1%. He characterized the economic state by stating, ‘the boat has remained afloat.’

In the healthcare sector, Arianna Gregis, CEO of Bayer Italy, highlighted a decline in European scientific research, which fell from 23% to 13% over the last decade, while China’s share rose to 18%. She noted that currently, only 45% of innovation reaches patients in Europe, with an average access time of 597 days. Furthermore, the Gimbe Foundation reported a significant gap in Italian public healthcare spending, noting a 36 billion euro deficit relative to European Union standards.

Political discussions centered on stability and reform. Matteo Renzi proposed a ‘German-style contract’ to mitigate political fragmentation through programmatic negotiations and signed policy commitments on wages, security, and Europe. While Elly Schlein indicated allies would discuss the proposal, Giuseppe Conte expressed caution regarding Renzi’s involvement. Meanwhile, Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni faces internal coalition tensions as she prepares for potential political battles leading toward 2027.

On judicial matters, Justice Minister Carlo Nordio described a recent judicial referendum defeat as ‘painful because unexpected,’ though he noted that high public interest warrants further reform discussions. Additionally, Elly Schlein criticized the government’s approach to regional autonomy, arguing it could increase inequalities between the north and south of the country.
