Italy is implementing strategies to expand the global presence of its trade fairs and enhance the international reach of its small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). The association It-Ex is seeking to establish agreements with international exhibition organizers to bolster the global impact of Italian fairs, supported by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation and the Ministry of Industry and Made in Italy. Building on these efforts, the Italian government is hosting the ‘Obiettivo Export’ initiative. In October 2026, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation hosted During the ‘Obiettivo Export: Imprese e territori del Centro Italia’ forum in Rome. Presided over by Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani, Rome, Unioncamere Secretary General Giuseppe Tripoli warned that Italian SMEs face the event risk of being excluded from international markets due to the rise of artificial intelligence. He noted that many buyers now utilize algorithms rather than human selection, which could potentially sideline the 99% of Italian businesses that are SMEs. To counter this, Chambers of Commerce are providing digital support and personalized guidance to help local companies navigate international trade. The forum served as a preparatory step for the National Export Conference 2026, scheduled for December in Milan. During the Rome forum, Unioncamere Secretary General Giuseppe Tripoli emphasized the necessity of assisting SMEs in navigating global markets, specifically noting how artificial intelligence is beginning to influence how international buyers select suppliers. The broader objective remains to expand the reach of ‘Made in Italy’ products and drive total Italian exports beyond 700 billion euros by 2027. Recent developments highlight the expanding scope of these economic interests. In Malaysia, interests, such as bilateral trade has surpassed with Malaysia surpassing 3 billion euros, with growth euros in sectors such as energy, like energy and electronics, and semiconductors. Additionally, increased Italian companies are increasing their presence at trade fairs in Libya; Libya, where the Italian Trade Agency (ICE) is working to diversify these interests beyond energy and construction into sectors such as fitness, nutrition, and agro-industry. Domestically, Confindustria has emphasized that SMEs must integrate into larger ecosystems to meet the 700 billion euro export target.
