In late July and throughout August 2026, Italian regional film commissions and cultural institutions focused on showcasing national cinema at major festivals. The TorinoFilmLab presented four projects at the 83rd Venice International Film Festival, including two feature films in competition and two short works, with backing from the Ministry of Culture. At the Alta Marea Festival in Termoli, Antonio Nolè’s debut short film ‘Chi ten i colp’ won Best Film from both the official jury and the audience, while Andrea Arcangeli and Andrea Palma received Best Director and Best Actor honors, respectively. Simultaneously, the Centro Sperimentale di Cinematografia contributed to the Venice program by presenting 4-K digital restorations, including Tinto Brass’s 1967 thriller ‘Col cuore in gola’ and Ettore Scola’s ‘Brutti, sporchi e cattivi’ in the Venezia Classici competition. The Trentino Film Commission highlighted its support for sustainable and socially relevant works. Victor Kossakovsky’s documentary ‘Holy Wood Dust’ received the commission’s Green Film certification for its production in regional locations. Additionally, the short film ‘Il senso della terra’ was slated for the Orizzonti Corti section, and director Andrea Pallaoro was set to compete with ‘Eco Chamber,’ a film based on a Bernardo Bertolucci screenplay. By mid-August, the Venice International Film Festival’s Orizzonti section featured a strong Italian presence, including Alina Marazzi’s ‘La ragazza con la Leica’ as the section opener, alongside works by Edoardo Gabbriellini, Tommaso Landucci, and Anna Foglietta. ~~The~~ As the festival ~~also showcased international titles, such~~ progressed, Nanni Moretti returned to the Lido with ‘Succederà questa notte.’ Artistic director Alberto Barbera described the film, based on the works of Eshkol Nevo, as ~~Werner Herzog’s ‘Bucking Fastard’ and films~~ “an authentic love story rather than a political or social commentary.” Other notable Italian entries include works by ~~Cédric Kahn~~ Luca Guadagnino and ~~Stéphane Brizé.~~ Mario Martone, as well as the competition debut of Edoardo De Angelis with ‘Il fuoco che ti porti dentro.’
