Throughout July 2026 Italy experienced a spate of unrelated fire incidents. Early in the month a blaze at the Re. Mat waste‑treatment plant in San Giorgio a Liri sent a thick black plume over Cassinate; separate fires in a Siracusa basement, a Rome garage, a restaurant on the southern outskirts of Rome, a reed‑bed‑to‑home fire in Mondragone, and a yacht explosion at Sanremo’s Portosole harbour were all extinguished without casualties, and environmental sampling began at the waste‑treatment site. On 25‑26 July a second wave of fires broke out across the peninsula. In addition to the already‑reported plant, restaurant and yacht fires, emergency crews tackled blazes at a company premises in Crotone, a legnaia in Muzzano, a prefabricated building in Casalgrande, a press facility in San Martino in Rio and various residential and commercial locations. Most incidents caused no injuries, but two elderly residents in Licata were hospitalised for smoke inhalation and a 94‑year‑old in Bologna suffered burns. Ongoing environmental monitoring after the Remat plant fire continued, with regional authorities testing soil and water for dioxins and related contaminants. Further details on the Sanremo yacht incident emerged: the explosion generated a dense column of black smoke visible for kilometres, prompted a temporary closure of nearby berths and the activation of safety protocols, and is now under investigation by local authorities to determine its cause and any environmental impact. Across all events, Italy’s fire brigades, police, Carabinieri and civil‑protection units coordinated rapid responses to contain flames, protect public health and limit property damage. The Remat blaze prompted regional civil‑protection officials to launch systematic sampling of soil and irrigation water in the most affected communes—Esperia, Pignataro Interamna, Aquino, Piedimonte San Germano, Villa Santa Lucia and others. Arpa Lazio will test for dioxins, furans, PCBs and hydrocarbons, with results to be released after laboratory analysis. Authorities noted the fire follows a similar incident at the same plant in April 2025, renewing scrutiny of safety standards at Italy’s waste‑processing facilities.
