The Italian Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport (MIT) is advancing a comprehensive overhaul of the national Highway Code, aiming to finalize the text by mid-October 2026. Following a public consultation period that closed on September 13, 2026, the draft revision has updated 795 different types of fines. While the reform aims for an overall reduction in penalty amounts for most violations, approximately 8% of sanctions will see increases. The proposal has drawn criticism from the Movimento Diritti dei Pedoni, which raised alarms regarding rules that could prohibit pedestrians from crossing at intersections without marked crosswalks.
