Authorities in Italy have launched separate investigations into fraudulent schemes involving immigration and citizenship processes. In Grosseto, an entrepreneur and his wife were arrested for allegedly exploiting the ‘Decreto Flussi’ immigration system. Investigators claim the couple recruited non-EU citizens, primarily from Morocco, by promising agricultural employment and residency permits in exchange for approximately 10,000 euros per person. The scheme reportedly involved the use of fake payslips to maintain documentation for migrants who found their promised jobs did not exist. In Agrigento, prosecutors have requested the indictment of 22 individuals, including local officials and lawyers, regarding a corruption probe into the fraudulent acquisition of Italian citizenship by Brazilian citizens. The investigation alleges that false residency certificates and administrative irregularities were used to accelerate citizenship claims through descent across several municipalities. municipalities, including Naro, Camastra, Comitini, Porto Empedocle, and Siculiana. Suspects include the Mayor of Camastra, Dario Gaglio, along with police inspectors and registry employees. Charges include forgery, corruption, and aiding illegal immigration, with a preliminary hearing scheduled for November 13. In a separate development in Ferrara, police arrested a 40-year-old Brazilian woman for allegedly orchestrating a criminal network that facilitated illegal citizenship for Brazilian nationals between 2022 and 2024. Investigators from Torre del Greco and Ferrara report that the group used fraudulent residency certifications to bypass requirements for ‘jure sanguinis’ citizenship, with over 70 individuals reportedly obtaining citizenship through the scheme. The operation allegedly involved the complicity of at least three public officials in the Municipality of Torre del Greco, with clients charged a minimum of 5,000 euros per application.
