Recent judicial developments in Italy have resulted in several acquittals across different jurisdictions. In Foggia, a retired police commissioner was acquitted of fraud charges, while a court in Perugia acquitted a driver involved in a fatal 2024 incident, ruling the event was “unpredictable and inevitable.” Additionally, a former Carabinieri colonel received a one-year prison sentence for defamation related to an investigation into the death of David Rossi.

In a separate ruling, the Court of Auditors acquitted Vittorio Sgarbi, the Mayor of Arpino, of allegations concerning financial damage to the state. The court found that his professional services did not violate laws regarding impartiality and that no damage to state funds was proven. The judges noted Sgarbi was exercising “fundamental rights and freedoms protected by the Constitution and the European Convention on Human Rights.”

Further legal proceedings involving Sgarbi have concluded with the Court of Auditors acquitting him regarding 121 professional consultancies performed during his tenure as Undersecretary to the Ministry of Culture. The court rejected a request for Sgarbi to reimburse the state over 200,000 euros, ruling that no financial damage to the public treasury was demonstrated. Judges determined his activities did not constitute a conflict of interest or neglect of institutional duties, noting that the topics of his contested lectures, such as ancient history, fell outside his specific ministerial delegation. Consequently, the Ministry of Culture has been ordered to pay Sgarbi 3,500 euros for legal expenses.
