Italian authorities have conducted several operations to combat illegal electricity connections and energy supply irregularities across different regions. In Taranto, police and technical personnel from Enel Distribuzione inspected the Paolo VI district and various commercial sites. These operations resulted in criminal charges against 25 individuals for suspected irregularities, with investigations continuing for others. Specific findings included a grill house and a pizzeria that utilized bypasses to evade meter measurements, as well as an illegal connection in a private residence in Martina Franca. The total economic damage from these activities was estimated at 180,000 euros. In Sicily, law enforcement has intensified efforts against energy fraud. In Partanna, Carabinieri arrested three individuals caught using illegal connections to the public grid by tampering with home meters. In Catania, State Police reported 10 individuals for aggravated electricity theft in the Villaggio Sant'Agata neighborhood, where technicians disconnected setups designed to provide zero-cost electricity through meter tampering. Further operations in Palermo uncovered a residential building on via Pietro Dell’Aquila in the Borgo Nuovo district that was illegally connected to the public grid. Carabinieri and Enel technicians identified a complex network of clandestine connections using makeshift cables installed upstream of the meters to draw electricity directly from the main distribution network. Ten residents, aged 29 to 76, were reported to the Public Prosecutor's Office for aggravated theft of electricity. Technicians removed the illegal cables to prevent safety hazards such as short circuits, while authorities indicated that inspections will continue in other neighborhoods to combat urban decay and illegal utility connections.
