Internal tensions within the Lega party have intensified as regional leaders and northern administrators challenge Matteo Salvini’s leadership. Following a Lombardy regional meeting marked by widespread criticism, some members suggested a transition toward a shared leadership model to accommodate regional governors. Key figures leading this opposition include Lombardy President Attilio Fontana and secretary Massimiliano Romeo, with discussions involving Giancarlo Giorgetti, Luca Zaia, and Massimiliano Fedriga regarding a potential collective management style. In response to these challenges and declining polling numbers, Salvini initially asserted that the party is a single entity, stating that those who disagree “do not represent the Lega.” While Romeo rejected Salvini’s proposed October congress as a “trappolone” (trap), Salvini moved forward with plans for an extraordinary congress in Milan on October 24-25. Ahead of the congress, Salvini and deputy secretaries Claudio Durigon, Silvia Sardone, and Alberto Stefani have resigned to facilitate Salvini’s candidacy for the leadership role. Treasurer Alberto Di Rubba has been appointed acting deputy secretary to administer the party. Salvini intends to use the congress to introduce a new political secretariat and update the party’s symbol. The leadership contest has become more explicit with Senator Massimo Garavaglia announcing he is considering a candidacy. Representing the party’s northern and government-aligned wing, Garavaglia indicated his run would necessitate a secret ballot, challenging any prospect of unanimous acclamation for Salvini. Salvini responded that additional candidates bringing proposals is a “positive development,” expressing confidence in his own ideas and the party militants. As the Milan congress approaches, Mario Abbruzzese, the Regional Organization Secretary for Lazio, has called for an end to attempts to delegitimize leadership, arguing that the leader's mandate comes directly from the congress base. Abbruzzese emphasized that political debates should occur within official venues rather than through leaks.
