Recent judicial interventions in Italian municipal elections have led to court-ordered ballot verifications in Rende and Viareggio. In Rende, the Regional Administrative Court (Tar) mandated a new verification of ballots following a dispute over a municipal election seat between Enrico Monaco and Luigi Marafioti. The court specifically ordered a check of section 14 due to a discrepancy where the official report attributed 8 votes to Monaco while the scrutiny table recorded 18. This process must be completed within 60 days. In Viareggio, the Regional Administrative Court of Tuscany ordered a technical assessment involving the reopening of ballot envelopes in four polling sections (17, 35, 60, and 61). This follows an appeal by Federica Maineri and the center-left coalition contesting the election of Sara Grilli. The court determined that document comparisons were insufficient to resolve doubts regarding the “traceability ‘traceability and continuous custody of electoral materials” materials’ in those sections. Following the ruling, Mayor Sara Grilli expressed serenity, stating she welcomes the judicial process and will provide full cooperation to distinguish “facts from hypotheses” and restore certainty to the process. Conversely, petitioner Federica Maineri described the court’s decision to reopen the envelopes as a “victory for transparency,” noting that the court rejected claims of inadmissibility and found that the allegations could potentially lead to the partial or total annulment of the election results.
