Italian museum free admission initiatives

Overview

Italian state museums and local cultural sites continue to participate in national initiatives offering free admission on the first Sunday of the month. This program, established by a 2014 decree, allows access to various monuments, galleries, archaeological sites, and parks without a ticket.

For the ‘Domenica al Museo’ initiative on October 4, 2026, the Italian Ministry of Culture’s program offers free admission to hundreds of state-run sites, including locations in Rome, Piedmont, Lombardy, Veneto, and Salerno. In Florence, the ‘Domenica Metropolitana’ event provides free access to Florentine Civic Museums and Palazzo Medici Riccardi for residents of the Metropolitan City of Florence.

In the Valle dei Templi, visitors can access guided tours of underground paths and an exhibition of 25 original works by Fernando Botero titled ‘El encanto del Mito.’ In the province of Salerno, the initiative covers sites from Cilento to Vallo di Diano, including the archaeological parks of Paestum and Velia, supported by a free ‘Paestum & Velia on the road’ shuttle service.

Other regional activities include free entry to the Castello del Buonconsiglio and the Mart museum in Trentino. Additionally, the ‘Extra Moenia 2026’ festival, titled ‘Voci della Storia,’ is taking place in Naples from October 4 to 31, offering free classical music, theater, and dance performances in various neighborhoods.
