Italian regional investment programs

Entities: Alessandro Beduschi · Doppia transizione voucher · Dissesto 2024 fund · Region of Lombardy · Scuola in Ascolto

Overview

In late July 2026, Lombardy announced a comprehensive funding package exceeding €60 million, covering sectors such as aquaculture, digital upgrades for SMEs, hydro-geological risk mitigation, cultural initiatives, school-based psychological support, and humanitarian aid for Gaza, Lebanon and Ukraine.

By early August, Lombardy’s spending focus narrowed to targeted agricultural support, allocating more than €2.8 million to protect crops from invasive insects and to modernise livestock facilities in mountain municipalities. At the same time, the Basilicata region introduced its own measures, offering up to 70% cost-share for forest-nursery enterprises and granting its first authorisations for battery-energy-storage systems, approving projects that will inject a combined 348 MW into the national grid.

On August 6, the Italian government expanded these digital and energy-related efforts by approving two strategic investment programs totaling approximately €6.8 billion for data center development. In Lombardy, a €5.3 billion hyperscale campus with 400 MW capacity is planned for the Milan metropolitan area. In Sardinia, a €1.49 billion Edge AI data center is slated for the former Monte Sinni coal mine area, integrating renewable energy and storage. Additionally, Basilicata has authorized two battery energy storage systems (BESS) in Melfi and Picerno, with a combined capacity of 348 MW, to help stabilize the electrical grid.
