Several Italian municipalities are competing for the title of ‘Capitale italiana del mare 2027’ (Italian Sea Capital 2027). Initial candidates included Trapani, which submitted its bid with support from the Port Authority of the Western Sicilian Sea and local commerce organizations to focus on logistics and the blue economy. Vico Equense also entered the competition, emphasizing sustainable tourism and environmental protection. Following these entries, Agropoli and Bari have officially submitted their candidacies. Agropoli’s proposal seeks to integrate environmental protection and culture through a strategy proposal, titled ‘Agropoli mare 2027 – Cinque rotte, un solo programma’. programma’, seeks to integrate environmental protection, culture, sports, and the blue economy, potentially leveraging synergies with America’s Cup regattas in nearby Naples. Bari’s bid, themed ‘Mare, capitale di Bari - Vivere la costa, connettere le rotte, custodire il futuro’, focuses on coastal regeneration and the city’s significant maritime economy, which supported approximately 18,000 jobs in 2024. Castellabate has also joined the competition with its ‘Radici del Mare’ (Roots of the Sea) project. This initiative is built upon four pillars: marine environment and biodiversity, culture and maritime villages, underwater archaeology, and innovation and the blue economy. Mayor Marco Rizzo stated the project aims to create long-term public utility works and scientific interventions to transform coastal resources into drivers for sustainable development.
