Starting October 1, 2026, various Italian cities and provinces have implemented seasonal anti-smog and traffic restriction measures to combat air pollution and PM10 levels during the autumn and winter months. In Rome, the ‘Fascia Verde’ macro-area has introduced a permanent ban on petrol vehicles up to Euro 2 and diesel vehicles up to Euro 3, with additional time-based limitations for Euro 4 diesel vehicles. Enforcement is being increased through electronic gates, though exemptions are provided for disabled persons, essential public services, and historic vehicles. In the province of Vicenza, measures are active until April 30, 2027. While a structural ban on Euro 5 diesel vehicles has been postponed to October 2027, temporary measures include extending traffic limitation time slots and restricting certain heating systems and biomass generators in municipalities with populations over 100,000 during high-alert periods. In Cesenatico, Mayor Matteo Gozzoli has implemented air quality measures effective through March 31, 2027. From Monday to Friday, between 8:30 and 18:30, certain private vehicles—including Euro 0 to 2 petrol and LPG/methane vehicles, Euro 0 to 4 diesel vehicles, and Euro 0 to 2 mopeds—are prohibited from circulating in the main town and several districts. Exemptions include electric and hybrid vehicles, carpooling, and emergency services. Furthermore, the use of wood biomass heating systems rated below ‘4-star’ is prohibited in buildings with alternative heating, and generators under 35 kW must use certified A1 class pellets. In Rimini, Naples, new restrictions targeting specific diesel and gasoline/LPG/methane vehicles near state highway 16 remain in effect until effective from October 19, 2026, through March 31, 2027. In Verona, Mayor Damiano Tommasi has signed ordinances to restrict highly polluting vehicles, extending urban traffic bans until 19:30 on weekdays 2027, target Euro 0 and adjusting heating regulations for public Euro 1 cars and commercial buildings. vehicles, diesel vehicles up to Euro 5 (categories N1, N2, and N3), and motorcycles up to Euro 2. These measures follow data from Arpac Campania showing PM10 and nitrogen dioxide levels frequently approaching regulatory thresholds. Certain routes, including the A1 and A3 motorways, are excluded.
