As the 2026–27 school year begins, Italian regional and local administrations are finalizing logistics, subsidies, and support services. While national funds of 136 million euros for textbooks and 20 million euros for municipalities remain central, local initiatives are expanding. In Puglia, the regional government has approved an 8 million euro fund to provide a 50% discount on monthly public transport subscriptions for commuting students from low-income families. In Gravina, the municipality has extended a temporary contract for school transportation services following delays in a three-year tender process. In Genoa, the Local Police are launching an extraordinary presence plan starting September 14, 2026, to manage traffic and safety at 30 school sites. Regional efforts vary: Abruzzo has institutionalized discounts for commuting students in 175 mountain municipalities, while Molise utilizes the ‘Ti Muovi’ platform. However, some areas face challenges; Linee Lecco has implemented a 1.8% tariff increase, and reports from Varese indicate service capacity issues where students have been unable to board overcrowded buses. Meanwhile, Quinto di Treviso is absorbing cost increases to stabilize school meal and transport fees. Municipalities are also providing targeted aid for educational materials. In Reggio Calabria, middle and high school students with an ISEE below 14,365.00 euros can apply for book vouchers or free textbooks via an online platform by September 20.
