Italian teen detention in Malta

Overview

The 15‑year‑old Italian boy was arrested in late May 2024 after a bomb threat at Lily of the Valley Secondary School in Mosta, Malta. He was initially placed in the adult Corradino prison in solitary confinement, then transferred to a juvenile facility where he spent weeks confined for about 22 hours a day, forced to eat standing and without basic utensils. His parents and the Italian embassy have repeatedly criticised the conditions as violating human‑rights standards and have made consular visits. Maltese interior minister Glenn Bedingfield said the teenager faces serious charges, including production of child‑sexual‑abuse material and association with a criminal group. By early August, the investigation broadened to examine a possible online gaming group that may have supplied illicit material and attempted extortion, and Italian ambassador Valentina Setta visited the detainee. A bail request was denied, with the next court hearing scheduled for 19 August.
