Italian universities are expanding their medical and nursing degree capacities for the 2026/2027 academic year to address the demand for healthcare professionals. The University of Milan (Statale) is increasing its Medicine and Surgery program seats by 60, bringing the total from 556 to 616. This expansion includes the Vialba–Fatebenefratelli Sacco teaching pole and utilizes an open-semester model that offers both in-person and synchronous online learning. ~~Additionally, the~~ The University of Milano-Bicocca is increasing its Medicine and Surgery positions by 32, reaching a total of 260 spots. This growth includes 20 additional spots for the Italian-language course in ~~Monza~~ Monza, which rises from 180 to 200 seats, and 12 spots for the international course in ~~Bergamo.~~ Bergamo, increasing from 48 to 60 seats. The university recently ranked first in the Censis rankings for its single-cycle master’s degree in Medicine and Surgery. Additionally, the University of Modena and Reggio Emilia (Unimore) is implementing a 32% increase in its Medicine and Surgery program, raising the total to 305 seats. Unimore also reported a 10.5% increase in nursing program capacity, with the Modena campus expanding from 162 to 192 seats. The institution recently ranked second nationally among state universities in the Censis indicator for career progression in medicine.
