Italian welfare welfare, healthcare, and healthcare sector pharmaceutical developments
Discussions regarding Italy’s welfare and healthcare sectors have focused on sustainability, competitiveness, and innovation. At the Global Welfare Summit, industry leaders emphasized using corporate welfare as a strategic tool for workforce retention and sought to close the gap between large corporations and small-to-medium enterprises. In the medical technology sector, new funding was secured to support biotech and medtech startups in the Lombardy region. Following these developments, Health Minister Orazio Schillaci addressed the sustainability of the National Health Service (SSN) in Rome. He noted an increase of nearly 18 billion euros in the National Health Fund and discussed the creation of over 1,200 community health houses through the PNRR. While addressing healthcare inequalities between cities and municipalities, leaders also turned to industrial productivity, examining how small and medium-sized enterprises can better utilize capital and technology to drive economic security. Expanding on these industrial themes, Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni identified the pharmaceutical industry as a driving force of the “Made in Italy” brand. In a letter marking the 50th anniversary of Johnson & Johnson Innovative Medicines in Latina, Meloni noted that in 2025, Italian pharmaceutical production reached 74 billion euros, with exports exceeding 69 billion euros. The sector is viewed as a strategic component for Italy's competitiveness and strategic autonomy, integrating scientific research, advanced technology, and industrial capacity. Meloni emphasized the government's commitment to strengthening the national health service and fostering collaboration between the scientific community and local industries.
