Italian woman rescued from abuse in Egypt
Overview
An Italian woman from Ragusa was rescued at Palermo’s Falcone and Borsellino Airport after escaping years of confinement and abuse in Egypt. The victim, who had been married to an Egyptian citizen for over ten years, used a universal hand signal for help to alert border police upon her arrival between August 29 and 30.
The woman alleged that since at least 2017, she had suffered physical violence, sexual assault, and extreme isolation in Cairo, including being denied access to money, work, or telephone use. She reportedly fled after learning her husband planned to sell her to another man for money.
The rescue was coordinated by the Palermo Prosecutor's Office after the victim contacted her aunt in France via public Wi-Fi. Upon her arrival, the husband reportedly attempted to react violently against police officers. He has been charged with domestic abuse and resisting a public official, while the woman remains in a protected facility.
