On a national scale, trends between 2019 and 2024 reveal a dual movement of highly qualified individuals. While over 78,000 Italian citizens aged 25 to 34 with university degrees moved abroad, the country saw an influx of nearly 88,000 foreign young adults with similar qualifications, resulting in a positive net balance of approximately 9,593 young graduates entering Italy. In 2024, more than 141,000 Italian citizens transferred residency abroad, including approximately 45,000 degree holders. The exodus is most concentrated in high-specialization and technology-driven sectors, driven by wage gaps and insufficient research investment.
