During the 2026 UCI Track Cycling World Championships in Shanghai, the Italian national team achieved multiple podium finishes. Initial successes included two silver medals in the team pursuit events, earned by the men’s quartet and the women’s squad. Following these results, Jonathan Milan secured a gold medal in the individual pursuit and established a new world record. Milan became the first rider to break the 3-minute 59-second barrier during qualifying, recording a time of 3:58.850. This performance improved upon his own previous world record of 3:59.153 set in 2024. In the final, he defeated Denmark’s Frederik Madsen with a time of 4:00.769 to secure the world title. Teammate Filippo Ganna also reached the podium in the same event, winning the bronze medal after defeating Rasmus Pedersen in the third-place race. In the final days of the competition, Italian athletes secured several notable placements despite missing additional medals. Martina Alzini finished fourth in the women’s individual pursuit, while Simone Consonni took fifth in the men’s omnium. The Olympic champion duo of Chiara Consonni and Vittoria Guazzini placed sixth in the Madison. The Italian delegation concluded the championships with a total of four medals: one gold, two silvers, and one bronze. The championships also marked a significant moment for track cycling in Asia, as Shanghai hosted the competition for the first time, serving as a showcase for China’s growing investment in cycling infrastructure.
