Italy extreme heatwave impacts

Extreme summer heat in Italy has prompted various regulatory and technical concerns regarding heat management and vehicle safety.

Initial responses focused on mitigation strategies, such as recommending solar-powered ventilators for horse stables to improve airflow and reduce heat-related health risks. Additionally, authorities enforced anti-idling regulations, fining drivers between €223 and €444 for leaving engines running while parked to power air conditioning.

As the heatwave progressed, the focus shifted to the significant mechanical risks posed to automobiles. The body shop association Federcarrozzieri warned that extreme temperatures could lead to substantial repair costs, potentially reaching 16,400 euros per vehicle. Specific concerns include accelerated tire wear due to high asphalt temperatures, battery failure, and engine seizure caused by cooling system stress and reduced oil viscosity. Interior damage to plastics and upholstery, as well as exterior paint degradation, were also identified as primary risks.

Recent reports confirm that asphalt temperatures can exceed 60°C, exacerbating these risks through fluid evaporation and potential component failure. New expert warnings have expanded these concerns to include potential damage to electronic devices and medications left in parked vehicles. To mitigate cabin heat, tests by ADAC suggest that external sunshades are more effective than internal reflectors. The ongoing heatwaves continue to trigger health warnings across numerous Italian cities and maintain the heightened risk of vehicle damage, specifically regarding accelerated wear on tires and batteries.
