Italy health sector funding initiatives

In late July 2026 the Italian Ministry of Health unveiled a series of new financial commitments aimed at strengthening the national health system. On 27 July, Minister Orazio Schillaci announced a €235.8 million allocation to equip family doctors with first‑level diagnostic devices such as ultrasounds, electro‑cardiographs and spirometers. The move was framed as part of a broader push to modernise primary care, with SNAMI president Simona Autunnali urging parallel investment in GP training, specialization and remuneration to ensure the technology translates into better outcomes and reduced pressure on emergency departments.

Two days later, the minister presented an €80 million budget line for mental‑health services and introduced the first National Mental Health Plan for 2025‑2030, the first such strategy after a 13‑year gap. The plan targets territorial service strengthening, early multidisciplinary care and specific attention to children and adolescents. The 2024 budget also earmarked €100 million for Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias. A new support service, “AscoltaMi”, launched in May 2026, provides non‑clinical assistance to vulnerable students, linking schools, families, social services and health providers.

Taken together, the announcements illustrate a rapid expansion of Italy’s health‑sector financing, covering both primary‑care diagnostics and mental‑health care, and signalling a shift toward integrated, well‑resourced community‑based services.
