Italy is advancing its hydrogen-based energy transition through both domestic research research, infrastructure development, and international cooperation. Domestically, Italian research institutions ENEA, CNR, and RSE concluded the Hydrogen Operational Research Plan (POR H2), a two-year, 120 million euro initiative focused on hydrogen production, storage, transport, and infrastructure. Concurrently, Sardegna Ricerche has launched projects to support small and medium-sized enterprises through experimental infrastructure for electrolyzers, green hydrogen purification, fuel cells, and Liquid Air Energy Storage. To ensure long-term viability, the Italian Hydrogen Association (H2IT) recently held a roundtable in Catania to discuss the sustainability of ‘Hydrogen Valleys’ following the conclusion of investments funded by the National Recovery and Resilience Plan (PNRR). The discussion focused on creating economic models that ensure structural integration and continuity beyond public funding, aiming to transform these territorial ecosystems into solid industrial chains that connect production, distribution, and consumption. On the international level, Italy and Algeria are deepening energy cooperation via the southern hydrogen corridor. During the second Pentaministerial meeting regarding the corridor in Algiers, Italian Minister of Environment and Energy Security Gilberto Pichetto Fratin and Algerian Minister of Energy and Renewable Energies Mourad Adjal discussed strengthening interconnections. Pichetto Fratin reaffirmed that hydrogen is a “fundamental solution” and a critical component for Italy to achieve its decarbonization goals and reach climate neutrality by 2050. The collaboration This collaboration, a key element of Italy’s Piano Mattei, aims to enhance energy security for both nations by diversifying supplies and reducing reliance on fossil fuels. This initiative remains a key element of Italy’s Piano Mattei, intended to foster shared development and mutual benefits through enhanced energy interconnections.
