Italy wildfire prevention and forest management debates

In the Abruzzo region, political opposition has launched an inquiry into the 2026-2028 forest fire prevention plan. Critics point to “scant funds” and a financing model that “greatly lowers its effectiveness” because procurement rules prevent interventions in high-risk areas. Other identified weaknesses include an incomplete radio network, poorly maintained water tanks, and a reduction in suppression coordinators. Experts have also noted that the abandonment of rural areas and a 64% decrease in farms have reduced the active land management necessary for prevention.

Following these concerns, regional representatives and labor unions in Sicily and Abruzzo are calling for a shift from emergency response to year-round maintenance. In Sicily, the UGL union is advocating for stable, year-round employment for forestry workers to mitigate fire and hydrogeological risks. In Abruzzo, officials have criticized the reliance on bureaucratic conventions with the Fire Brigade and Carabinieri, arguing that current funding and forest policies fail to address changing climatic conditions and the lack of maintenance by local authorities.
