The Instituto Tecnológico de las Américas (ITLA) is expanding its technological training and scholarship programs in the Dominican Republic. In late August 2026, the institution announced the opening of a new center in Barahona to provide specialized technical training to youth in the Enriquillo region. Additionally, in Santo Domingo Norte, 800 continuing education scholarships were delivered through the BTI program, covering fields such as artificial intelligence, software development, and cybersecurity. This brought the total number of government-authorized ITLA scholarships to 37,025. By early September 2026, ITLA awarded an additional 118 higher education scholarships through a second call for applications, representing an investment of RD$11 million. These scholarships focus on software development, multimedia, and information security. Academic Vice Rector Fabrizio Cabrera noted that over 47% of these recipients are women, indicating a growing interest in STEM disciplines among young women. In late September 2026, ITLA entered into two strategic cooperation agreements to advance digital transformation and cybersecurity. An agreement with the Tribunal Superior Electoral (TSE) will involve collaboration on institutional capacity building and specialized training, with the TSE providing legal guidance on electoral processes and civil registry services. Simultaneously, a partnership with Fortinet aims to strengthen the national cybersecurity ecosystem through knowledge exchange and the development of a high-tech laboratory. This initiative is intended to prepare Dominican youth for international remote work markets and improve local economic competitiveness. In early October 2026, ITLA announced a collaboration with the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) Group and the Ministry of Industry, Commerce and MSMEs (MICM) to implement the ‘Talent Up’ initiative. Supported by Google Cloud and Cisco Networking Academy, this regional program aims to provide 15,000 free scholarships for digital skills training. The MICM will act as the technical secretariat in the Dominican Republic to align training with the national digital economy.
