Iwo Jima monument vandalism in Virginia

Overview

A limestone Iwo Jima monument near Marine Corps Base Quantico in Virginia was vandalized with a sledgehammer, causing extensive damage estimated to cost hundreds of thousands of dollars. The sculpture, a replica of the Marine Corps War Memorial, suffered severe injuries including the decapitation of one figure and gouges to others.

Police arrested 27-year-old Miguel Alonso Maldonado Soriano at the scene. He faces multiple charges, including felony destruction of property and felony injury to a monument. Maldonado Soriano, a Mexican national and former DACA recipient whose status expired in August 2026, is being held without bond.

President Donald Trump condemned the attack as a “disgrace.” During a press interaction, the President suggested the suspect may have entered the country via the border. Police reports noted that Maldonado Soriano entered the United States illegally in December 1999.
