Spanish actor Jaime Lorente has transitioned into directing with his feature film, ‘El Mal Hijo’. An adaptation of Salvador S. Molina’s novel, the naturalist drama is set in rural Murcia and explores themes of family trauma, addiction, and generational cycles of violence. The narrative follows a protagonist named Rubén, tracing his journey from a turbulent childhood marked by parental neglect to young adulthood. To visually represent these life stages, Lorente and cinematographer Elías M. Félix AEC utilized different cinematic textures, filming the first half on 16 mm and the second half on 35 mm. mm to achieve an organic aesthetic. The project was a long-term endeavor that Lorente worked to realize for over five years. The film premiered in the New Directors section of the San Sebastián International Film Festival. During a promotional appearance on the RTVE program ‘La Revuelta’, Lorente discussed the work and commented on the importance of media independence, stating that programs should not be ‘subordinated to the Government’. Beyond his acting career, which includes roles in ‘Money Heist’ and ‘Elite’, Lorente is diversifying his professional interests through a theatrical production company, an investment firm, and a clothing brand.
