Jakarta’s air‑quality crisis deepened through mid‑2026. In mid‑May the city’s AQI rose to 155, prompting health warnings for children, the elderly and pregnant women. June saw a succession of unhealthy readings: AQI 117 on 5 June, 164 on 7 June, a very‑unhealthy 216‑218 on 12 June and a spike to 180 on 13 June, with PM2.5 often exceeding 70 µg/m³—far above WHO limits. The provincial government responded with a 60‑minute lights‑off on 13 June that saved 75 MWh of electricity and cut carbon emissions by 60 t CO₂e, and with free emission tests for 54 vehicles on the Kepulauan Seribu islands. A broader mitigation plan was announced, targeting 10 000 electric Trans‑Jakarta buses by 2030, expanding free public‑transport for vulnerable groups, and accelerating waste‑treatment facilities. In response to the ongoing crisis, the Jakarta Regional House of Representatives (DPRD DKI Jakarta) has included a Draft Regional Regulation (Raperda) on Air Pollution Control in its 2027 legislative program. This draft aims to replace an outdated 2005 regulation to address modern sources such as industrial activity, construction, and transboundary pollutants. Abdul Aziz, Chairman of the Bapemperda, stated the priority is to establish regulations that provide community protection.
