In early August 2026, English Championship club Burnley expressed interest in signing James Penrice, a 26-year-old left-back playing for AEK Athens. AEK Athens indicated a willingness to sell the defender, who had previously been acquired from Heart of Midlothian for approximately €1.8 million. By mid-August, the situation shifted as AEK Athens reached an agreement with Rangers to loan Penrice. Following On August 15, Rangers FC officially announced the agreement, Penrice was expected to undergo one-year loan signing of the 27-year-old defender following the successful completion of his medical examinations on August 14, leaving examinations. Under the terms of the agreement, AEK Athens in need will receive a loan fee of defensive reinforcements. 500,000 euros, with an option for Rangers to purchase the player next summer for 1.5 million euros. Upon joining the club, Penrice described his time winning a championship with AEK Athens as “an incredible experience” and characterized the move to Rangers as a “dream” fulfillment.
