Observations from NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope have identified magnesium-rich clay minerals on Neptune’s inner moons, including Proteus, Larissa, and Galatea, as well as within the planet’s ring system.

Because these magnesium-rich phyllosilicates require liquid water and high temperatures to form, researchers suggest they originated from a larger, water-rich progenitor body rather than the small, cold moons themselves. The findings support a theory that Neptune’s original satellite system underwent a catastrophic disruption when the moon Triton was gravitationally captured from the Kuiper Belt. This event likely caused collisions that destroyed larger bodies, leaving behind debris that eventually re-formed into the current inner moons and rings.

Recent analysis led by Ryleigh Davis of the University of California San Diego reinforces the theory that these minerals are remnants of the deep interior of a much larger ancient world that was destroyed billions of years ago. New observations confirm these findings, noting that the catastrophic event involving Triton may have occurred approximately 4.5 billion years ago.
