Japan demographic and marriage anxiety

Recent surveys in Japan highlight growing demographic and social anxieties among the population, particularly regarding marriage and child-rearing. A Job Research Institute survey found a discrepancy between the ideal number of children (most commonly two) and the actual number being had (most commonly one). Approximately 78.9% of respondents cited economic pressures, such as rising prices and education costs, as barriers to achieving their ideal family size.

Complementary data from the Children and Families Agency, based on a survey of 100,000 individuals aged 15 to 39, indicates significant hesitation regarding marriage. While 37.5% of youth express a desire to marry, a substantial portion—between 27% and 35.1%—have no intention of doing so. Primary obstacles identified include income instability, loss of personal time, and a lack of potential partners. The agency noted that unmarried individuals, especially those in their 30s, reported higher levels of loneliness and lower life satisfaction.

Detailed findings from the agency emphasize that 40% of respondents cite anxiety over having a stable income to support married life as a primary obstacle. Other major deterrents include the loss of leisure time and hobbies (34.4%) and a lack of potential partners (32.6%). Beyond economics, over half of respondents reported social and psychological challenges, such as difficulty trusting others, dissatisfaction with physical appearance, and career uncertainty. The agency plans to use these insights to inform future policies regarding youth support and declining birthrates.
