Japan distributed computing and network development

Overview

Japan is advancing several initiatives focused on distributed computing and high-speed optical networks to support AI and quantum technologies.

In late 2026, NEC Corporation and partners began a demonstration project in Tochigi Prefecture selected by the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications. This project utilizes the All-Photonics Network (APN) to connect distributed GPU servers, aiming to improve resource efficiency and disaster resilience by reducing reliance on metropolitan data centers. One application includes using AI for real-time inference on baseball game footage.

Concurrently, a consortium of seven organizations, including academic and private entities, launched a project to develop a distributed quantum computing platform. Supported by NEDO, this initiative aims to connect quantum clusters with high-speed relational database clusters via ultra-low-latency optical networks. The project seeks to scale computational capacity to hundreds of thousands of qubits and intends to provide large-scale execution platforms as a service by approximately 2030.
