Japan graduate hiring trends
Entities: Doshisha University · Mitsui & Co. · Itochu Corporation · Hitotsubashi University · Ritsumeikan University
Overview
A survey of eleven universities in the Kyoto and Shiga regions reported that graduate employment rates edged up to a historic high, staying above 90 % for a second year in a row. The rise reflects a tight labour market for new graduates amid Japan’s demographic decline.
Separate nationwide rankings of university hiring by major Japanese firms identified the country's largest sogo‑shosha—Mitsubishi, Itochu, Mitsui & Co., Sumitomo and Marubeni—as the top employers of elite‑university graduates. Real‑estate arms of these groups improved their standings, while consulting firms fell. The same rankings highlighted that graduates now aim for higher future earnings, with an average desired salary of ¥946 million and 43.3 % targeting ¥1 billion or more.
