The 2026 Japanese heatwave has escalated into a “disaster-level” event, with temperatures regularly exceeding 35 °C. This extreme heat has caused a sharp rise in heat-related deaths and emergency transports, particularly among the elderly. In Tokyo, a single day saw 453 hospitalizations, the highest number of emergency admissions since systematic tracking began in 2010. The heat has also impacted local wildlife, including the deaths of three lions at a capital city zoo. Temperatures have continued to climb, with Akiota Town recording a record 39.2 °C and regions like Oita Prefecture approaching 40 °C. The Japan Meteorological Agency has introduced the term “kokushobi” (cruelly hot day) to describe these conditions. Authorities have issued heatstroke alerts across 26 prefectures, covering regions such as Tokai, Kinki, Chugoku, Shikoku, and much of Kyushu. Highs of 38.2 °C have been recorded in Wakayama and Tokushima, with Nagoya and Nara also facing temperatures near 38 °C. In the Hokuriku region, temperatures are also expected to remain high following recent heavy rainfall. Officials are urging the public to monitor the Wet Bulb Globe Temperature (WBGT) index, which accounts for humidity and solar radiation, rather than relying solely on air temperature. To combat these threats, industries are adopting new technologies. The “Do Hiemon Box,” a vending machine-sized cooling cabin developed by SDRS and distributed by Trusco Nakayama, has seen increased demand. Priced at approximately 1.5 million yen, the unit maintains an internal temperature of 15 °C and uses 5°C air streams to provide rapid relief. It is being utilized in steel plants, construction sites, and golf courses, with Trusco Nakayama reporting a doubling of annual demand for workplace cooling products.
