Tensions between Japan and North Korea have escalated following North Korea’s missile activities and Japan’s subsequent defense policy updates. In June, North Korea launched at least one short-range ballistic missile that landed outside Japan’s exclusive economic zone, marking the sixth such launch of the year. In its 2026 defense white paper, the Japanese government characterized North Korea’s rapid missile development as an “imminent and even more serious threat.” The document also warned that deepening military cooperation between North Korea and Russia—including the transfer of artillery, missiles, and the deployment of troops—poses a “significant risk” to regional security. Japan further noted concerns regarding China’s maritime military influence. North Korea has responded with sharp condemnations, labeling the document a “re-invasion white paper” or a “reinvasion-minded” plan designed to “legitimize the operation of a war machine.” Through the state-run Korean Central News Agency (KCNA), Pyongyang ~~argues~~ argued that Japan is ~~using perceived threats from~~ groundlessly characterizing North ~~Korea, China, and Russia~~ Korea as its primary strategic threat to justify a “reckless arms buildup” and its pursuit of becoming a military powerhouse. In response to Japan’s defense modernization, Kim Yo Jong, sister of North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, warned of “additional military options.” Following these tensions, North Korea conducted short-range ballistic missile tests toward the waters between the two nations.
