Japan-Russia Kuril Islands dispute escalation
Overview
Geopolitical tensions in the Far East have intensified following Russian President Vladimir Putin’s visit to the Kuril Islands. The dispute over the island chain, which Japan refers to as the Northern Territories, is viewed as a strategic issue due to its control over access to the Bering Sea and the North Pacific.
Following the visit to Etorofu (Iturup), Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi stated that the move has made restoring relations in the medium- to long-term difficult. While Tokyo has lodged formal protests, the Japanese government faces difficulties implementing aggressive countermeasures, such as new sanctions, because of a continued need for stable energy procurement from Russia.
Russia has reinforced its presence on the islands and continued military activities in the region, signaling that its sovereignty over the territory is not up for negotiation. Meanwhile, Japanese Foreign Minister Toshimitsu Motegi has ruled out recalling the Japanese Ambassador to Russia as a hardline measure.
