Japanese anime industry economic growth
Overview
The Japanese anime industry reached a record revenue of approximately $28.5 billion (4.5 trillion yen) in 2025, marking a 15.8% increase from the previous year. Data from the Association of Japanese Animations (AJA) indicates a significant shift in market dynamics, as international revenue of roughly $16 billion surpassed the domestic market, which generated about $12 billion.
A primary driver of this growth was the global success of the film “Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba – Infinity Castle,” which earned approximately $800 million worldwide. Revenue at anime production studios also saw an 8.4% increase, reaching $3.2 billion.
To sustain this momentum, the Japanese government is pursuing an IP360 strategy with the goal of reaching $130 billion in overseas sales of Japanese content by 2033. Anime is expected to contribute 6 trillion yen toward this target.
